Webinar Summary: Sepsis – A Practical Training for Rural Hospitals

Part of the SouthlandMD Essential Emergency Care for Rural Hospitals Education Series

Webinar presented by Dr. Jonathan Williams, Chief Medical Officer at SouthlandMD

SouthlandMD’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Jonathan Williams, recently led an educational webinar focused on Sepsis, one of the most time-sensitive and high-risk conditions encountered in emergency medicine. As part of SouthlandMD’s Essential Emergency Care for Rural Hospitals series, the session provided practical, expert-led education designed specifically to support rural healthcare teams in quickly and effectively identifying and managing sepsis.

This training equips physicians, advanced practice providers, and care teams with the tools and workflows needed to recognize, manage, and document sepsis appropriately—particularly in rural settings where limited resources, staffing challenges, and transport times can impact response efforts.

During the webinar, Dr. Williams emphasized why sepsis remains a major clinical priority across emergency and inpatient care settings. Early recognition and intervention remain critical to reducing morbidity and mortality; standardized workflows and rapid escalation protocols can significantly improve patient outcomes.

Key topics covered during the training included:

  • Defining sepsis and recognizing early warning signs and symptoms
  • Understanding why sepsis remains a leading concern in emergency medicine
  • Reviewing the latest Surviving Sepsis Guidelines and how to apply them in practice
  • Recognizing and initiating a Code Sepsis response
  • Navigating common clinical workflows to improve speed and coordination of care
  • Accurately documenting care to reflect clinical decision-making and support compliance

In addition to clinical education, the session highlighted the importance of communication, rapid assessment, and coordinated team response to ensure patients receive timely, evidence-based care from the moment they enter the Emergency Department.

SouthlandMD’s Essential Emergency Care series was created to support rural hospitals with accessible education that is both practical and immediately applicable. Trainings are available through on-site sessions for partner and non-partner hospitals, as well as on-demand online learning opportunities in partnership with Hometown Health University. CME credits are also offered.

Through educational initiatives like this, SouthlandMD continues its commitment to strengthening rural healthcare by providing frontline teams with the knowledge, confidence, and resources needed to improve patient outcomes across rural hospitals
